Did you know that smoothies are wonderful options to substitute your meals or snacks? These delicious, healthy drinks are made up mostly of fruits, vegetables and other nutrient dense sources. Some would even include a whole egg or a piece of fish to add protein content.

The best smoothies should come from real whole food ingredients – not from a packaged mix as these contain chemically altered ingredients. As smoothies contain fiber, they also help in  improving your gut health and overall immune system.

Acai berries are small, round and deep purple to black in color. They slightly feel like the taste of chocolate and wild berries combined. Not too sweet, you can definitely taste their berry-flavor. Just like any superfood, acai berries contain high quantities of antioxidants.

According to some studies, they contains higher levels of antioxidants with potent properties compared to blueberries, strawberries, cranberries and raspberries. They are also rich in healthy essential fats and fiber which aid to improve digestion. In addition, they contribute to healthy nails, skin and hair, reduce the risk of coronary diseases, lower blood sugar and may reduce the likelihood of cancer.

Why do you need to add turmeric?

If you are making a delicious smoothie, why not include healthy spices that you may not be a regular part of your diet? Believe it or not, spices hold even more antioxidants than all the berries combined. But because they come in a wide array of pungent and unconventional flavors, it can be difficult to include them in our daily diet.

Turmeric contains a potent anti-inflammatory compound called curcumin. It has been used for thousands of years to treat health conditions like ulcers and respiratory related ailments. Today, it is a known natural treatment for individuals suffering from the complications brought about by  chronic inflammation. Turmeric and curcumin benefits are well documented in reviews and testimonials from individuals who take this supplement form religiously.

It has also been reported to alleviate chronic pain, treat diabetes, and fight depression. Clinical studies of turmeric as an acting agent against cancer also show promising results. It has been proven to reduce tumor cell growth and prevent cancer from recurring.

These two ingredients combined will help people who are trying to manage health conditions like leaky gut syndrome, gas pain, prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and rheumatoid arthritis. And because of its high antioxidant content, this smoothie will also help reduce oxidative damage and improve collagen production in your body. This is a beauty and health drink combined.

Be reminded that acai berries are not too sweet, and turmeric can be pungent. Adding other fruits like blueberries, cherries or bananas can add sweetness without the worry of possibly raising your blood sugar.

This is also a great drink to satisfy a sweet tooth during pregnancy for those who are dealing with gestational diabetes. And because of its exceptional content in healthy fats, lactating mothers can take advantage of this drink as well.
