Doula Services

The energy and commitment that is put into birth and parenting is not regarded with the weight it deserves. We live in a time when people are expected to transition into parenthood with very few supports. Pregnancy, birth and early postpartum are demanding, challenging and immensely rewarding. You deserve a village to support you through these changes. Whether you’re looking for someone to answer your questions, hold your hand or guide you through the many choices you are expected to make, you deserve a doula. Read more to see what kind of support I offer, and get in touch to learn more.

“To say that Kira is a gift to the doula profession is an understatement. She is extremely talented, tremendously knowledgeable, and phenomenally skilled.  It is with every confidence that we recommend Kira Liss as your doula. Our family is better for having had her in our lives.”

Birth Doula Support

As a birth doula, I support you through your pregnancy, labour, birth and transition into the postpartum period. I support families giving birth in hospitals, birth centers and their homes. In the same vein, I offer the same thorough, dedicated support regardless of how you give birth.

After an initial consultation to find out if we are a good fit, we will have two prenatal visits together to discuss your birth plans. At this time, I will secure a back up doula in case an emergency were to arise. I am then available by phone and email during business hours until 2 weeks before your estimated due date, when I am officially on call for you. This means that I make any arrangements necessary to be at your side when you need me. I spend your labour and birth with you, and stay 1-2 hours after the birth to help you settle in and feed. We will then schedule a postpartum visit to see how things are going and support you any way that’s needed. As your doula, I will:

  • Answer your questionsdoula, toronto, birth, postpartum, lgbt, queer
  • Listen to your concerns, uncertainties and challenges
  • Provide hands on support during your labour and birth
  • Support your partner or other support people in finding ways to help
  • Validate the decisions that you make
  • Aide communication between yourself, your care providers and other support people
  • Connect you with other supports in the community
  • Lend you resources and books from my lending library

I will not:

  • Perform medical examinations or clinical tasks
  • Make decisions for you
  • Replace your partner or other support people
  • Prescribe treatments

Postpartum Doula Support

The transition into parenthood always easy, and I understand! Having extra support in those first few weeks after your birth can hugely affect how you settle into life with your little one. The role of a postpartum doula is dynamic and flexible. Our visits last a minimum of three hours and include a chance to discuss what is most important for you that day. So what does a postpartum doula do? As your postpartum doula, I will:

  • Support you with the transition into your new role
  • Teach baby care basics
  • Answer your questions about feeding, sleep, etc.
  • Empower you to find out what works for you and your baby
  • Help around the house with light housekeeping and meal preparation
  • Listen to your birth experience
  • Care for your little one if you want some rest, a shower or a moment to yourself
